My mother taught me how to pray the Rosary when I was a kid, so I’m making it my goal to teach my 7-year old daughter the same thing.
The first time I tried, I was sitting in bed praying the Rosary while she was watching her favorite show on Youtube. I called her and asked her to join me.
Because this was something new to her, she left Jojo Siwa, got a Rosary, and with bright eyes, said, ok teach me!
I taught her what to say, Our Father… Hail Mary… Glory Be… how to hold the Rosary… follow me as I say the words.
As any 7-year old would feel, she got bored and fell asleep. The next time I called her, she didn’t want to join me anymore.
There were times, though, when she’d sit beside me and just watch me pray – and then she’d fall asleep! If there’s one thing I’ve learned, teaching your kid the Rosary is one of the best ways to make them sleep early.
But last Saturday morning was different. I finally felt real progress. I finally saw that all those times she kept falling asleep, she was learning – at least before she dozed off.
I was sitting on the stairs praying the rosary that early morning, when she walked up to me, still half asleep.
I asked her to get a Rosary and join me. Lo and behold, she did! We recited the whole thing; we were able to finish until the very end. Of course, she got a few words wrong, but that’s what I was there for – to guide her.
A few more lessons I realized during those time when I felt like nothing’s happening:
- Always go back to your goal – It would’ve made my life easier if I prayed solo. It took me four times as long when I was with her teaching her and showing her how to do it.
But my goal is to teach her how to pray so that she’ll have a way of talking to God even when I’m no longer around. And having that goal in mind, makes the time and effort worth it.
- Don’t aim for perfection, aim for progress – Even when you think nothing’s happening – even when your kid keeps falling asleep – keep going. Success doesn’t happen overnight. As Dory aptly said, just keep swimming!
Are you in that phase where you think nothing’s happening? Don’t worry. Think of your goal and take small steps every day – and before you know it, you’re already there.
Keep going and God bless you more!
